Why Blogging?

Blogging provides people the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas with others from all over the world. It allows us to publish our ideas without having to go through a long drawn out process and we can publish for free. Bloggers receive feedback from those who read and comment which allows an online community to develop. After browsing many blogs, I'm coming to realize that teachers have their own blogging community.

Teachers use blogging to share their ideas with other teachers about what works for them in their classrooms and these are the blogs that I find myself reading the most. As I read, I notice the blog posts turn into a moment of reflection for the teachers who are blogging, which can be very beneficial for teachers. Reflecting on the events that happen in their classrooms makes teachers better teachers which makes blogging both beneficial for those reading the blog, but for those writing the blogs as well.

I have also come across teachers who use blogs in their classroom where they have their students write the posts. The blog posts may be about what is happening in class that week or it may be a piece of student writing that was chosen for the blog. These blogs are often a form of parent communication because parents can read the blogs in order to stay informed about what is happening in their child's classroom. This type of blog is beneficial for parents, students, and teachers. Students gain experiences while the teacher knows that parents are remaining informed.

As for this blog, I see myself using it to post my thoughts regarding topics we explore in ED 553 while also mixing in things I found useful in my classroom. The technology course I'm taking is helping me find more technology resources I'm able to use in my math classroom through the variety of topics we are exploring. This blog will provide a platform for me to share these classroom experiences and will provide more incentive for trying to incorporate new technology into my classroom.
